Atlanta continues to take over the TV industry

Atlanta rapper Big Boi recently announced his new venture, outside of music. He is partnering with DCR Finance Corp and 850 Entertainment to produce the upcoming crime ‘dramedy’ Government Records.

“I’ve teamed up with Chris DeBlasio at 850 Entertainment on a project called Government Records, it’s going to be big! Can’t wait to get things moving,” said Big Boi in a press release.

Empire meets Get Shorty

The show, which is currently in development, is described as a hybrid of FOX’s Empire and Epix’s Get Shorty. Outkast legend Big Boi will executive produce the new crime series which will star DMX, Rakim, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, and more. Big Boi will also appear on the show in the first season.

The series will tell the story of two ATF agents that work with the Atlanta Police Department (APD) and the FBI. Posing as music moguls, the agents will have the goal to destroy the crime ring, ran by one of the world’s most prolific recording artists of the 90′s, “Sugar Key”.

Series creator and head writer Terron R. Parsons stated, “This story, although it does fit into the genres of other successful shows, is unique in the way that it brings the worlds of law enforcement, crime, and the music industry together – with the task force creating a music studio, building this undercover operation just to bring down one guy. It’s essentially a heist movie, except the federal agents are the ones pulling the job. I don’t think we’ve really seen anything from that perspective before on TV.”

The team behind Government Records is currently shopping the series to networks and streaming services. They intend to shoot the entire show in Atlanta and have received funding from the DCR Finance Corp firm to back the production.
