The long wait for the new 21 Savage tape is finally over.
After years of teasing, 21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin are releasing a follow up to 2016’s Savage Mode this Friday, October 2. The announcement came complete with a horror-inspired video narrated by none other than Morgan Freeman.
“To be in ‘Savage Mode’ is to go hard, not allowing any being to stop or deter you from your mission. Basically, this means that when someone is in ‘Savage Mode’ they are not to fucked with,” says Freeman. “I now present to you Savage Mode 2.” A snippet of an unreleased song then plays following a Metro Boomin tag provided by Young Thug.
The announcement of Savage Mode 2 comes after over 28,000 people signed a petition demanding its release. The first Savage Mode was certified Gold by the RIAA and featured the 2x Platinum single “X” featuring Future.
In the four years since the original Savage Mode came out, 21 has released two more albums, a mixtape with Metro Boomin and Offset, racked up some Grammy nominations, and nearly got deported for being an illegal immigrant from England. (No one saw that one coming.)
On July 21 Savage and his foundation, “Leading By Example,” launched a free online financial literacy program for children stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program also has the support of Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ #ATLStrong Relief Fund.
Metro Boomin has kept a relatively low profile in the years since. When Savage Mode dropped, seemingly every song on the radio carried a Metro tag. After threatening to retire in April 2018, he dropped his own (hugely underrated) solo studio debut NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES later that year.
